Arrived Safely

Everything went smoothly today. We arrived safely and on time. After lunch at the CASAS Center, we went to a nearby mall to change money. Plenty of signs of globalization here. Free trade has brought more American products and restaurant chains than were fathomable even a dozen years ago. Obviously, there are pros and cons to this phenomenon but its hard to get excited about seeing IHOP and TJIF sitting on land that used to be protected Mayan ruins. Fortunately, there is still space in this commercial cacophony for Guatemala’s proudest export — coffee. Before leaving the mall we had to follow tradition by having our afternoon “cafecito.”

Coffee hour at Guatemala's "Cafe Barista." One never drinks coffee alone in this country.

Tomorrow morning we will have orientation and in the afternoon we will visit the palace, cathedral, and market of the center city. Then students will meet their host families.
